Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and whether or not you love it or hate it, or are a hopeless romantic, you need to check out these romantic cities in the world.

Renowned as the most romantic city in the world, Paris, the “city of love”, is home to the Eiffel Tower where around 680 marriage proposals a year are asked as well as the Pont des Arts, a pedestrian bridge in Paris that crosses the Seine where visitors lock in their love, covering it in padlocks. There is also the Temple of Love in Versailles, which was commissioned by Marie Antoinette in 1778 and The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur (Sacred Heart Basilica) in Montmartre is a well-known destination for romantics as well as the religious. All perfect destinations for romantics.

Also known as being a “city of love”, it’s easy to relax in Venice with scenic river cruises on a gondola for two or visit romantic Casanova’s favourite haunts, such as the Do Spade bar near the Rialto Bridge. Or visit the most famous place to kiss, the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) the footbridge that linked the Doge’s palace to the prison

Best known as a honeymoon destination, the romantic island of Santorini offers white sand beaches, beautiful blue and white vistas, a picturesque sea and pink and golden sunsets that are best viewed of Oia. Many of the restaurants and resorts are built into the side of the cliff so the majority offer a perfect view out to sea, instantly creating a romantic setting. 

Despite being the largest city in West Flanders, Belgium, Bruges is full of old-world charm. Dating back to medieval times, the cobblestone streets are packed with historic buildings, boutiques, chocolate shops and pretty squares. Romance is everywhere – from horse-drawn carriage rides to taking a cruise down one of the canals. For the very best views, and a fabulous place to propose, take the 366 steps up the Belfry – it’s certainly worth the climb!

Named as one of the top 20 romantic destinations, Kauai in Hawaii is known for its tropical rainforests, golden beaches and romantic sunsets. Why not take a scenic drive along the coast and look at what the island has to offer. Seafood is always fresh and there is always the opportunity to book a boat trip and experience a gourmet meal at the end of your day. 

Kyoto is a vibrant city to move to yet full of romantic locations. You can enjoy the tranquility of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens or relax in one of the fantastic public onsens (hot springs) – such as Tenzan no Yu. From March to April there are also amazing cherry blossom displays to experience, with many proposals taking place under the flowery boughs.

One of the most romantic cities in the world is Rome. Coined as the “eternal city” by the ancient Romans who believed that no matter what happened Rome would go on forever, there are thousands of years of history to explore and there is beauty to be found too. Romantics like to stay in Via Veneto, or Campo de’ Fiori, Spanish Steps area, or Trastevere, or visit the Trevi Fountain and wish for luck or take a trip to the Vatican and experience a mass in St. Peters Basilica.

The fairytale cottages found in thi Californian beach city and the fabulous beaches make Carmel-by-the-Sea one of the most romantic places in America. There are a vast array of cafes, wine tasting rooms, trails to explore as well as plenty of charming hotels to stay in.

More island than city, the Maldives has to be one of the most romantic destinations in the world.
